The short version
Tripwire keeps everything on your phone. There is no account, no analytics, no tracking, and the app contains no networking code, so it cannot send anything anywhere. When movement trips the wire, the app saves photos and a short video clip inside the app on your phone. You decide whether that evidence is ever exported, and you can delete it at any time. Deleting the app deletes all of it.
What the app accesses, and why
Camera. While armed, Tripwire reads the live camera feed and reduces each frame to a small grayscale image (160 by 120 pixels) about ten times a second to measure how much of the scene changed. Those analysis frames exist only in memory. When movement trips the wire, the app saves the frame that tripped it and two follow-up photographs (about one and three seconds later) as JPEG files, and records a video clip of about ten seconds (H.264, at the camera's supported resolution up to 1080p).
Microphone. The first time you arm, iOS asks whether Tripwire may use the microphone. If you allow it, the ten-second evidence clip includes mono audio. If you decline, the clip is silent and the app says so on each event. The microphone is used only while an evidence clip is being recorded, never while the app is merely armed.
Depth sensor (LiDAR on iPhone Pro models, TrueDepth on the front). If your phone has one and "Use LiDAR / depth when available" is on, the app also reads a low resolution depth map (distances, not an image) while armed, to tell a person entering the scene from a change in lighting. Depth maps are used in memory only; they are never saved, and the only thing recorded about them is, per event, the percentage of the scene whose distance changed and the nearest such distance.
Motion sensors. The app reads the phone's motion sensors to confirm the phone is resting still before it arms, and to stop monitoring if the phone itself is moved. Sensor readings are used in the moment and are not stored.
Notifications (optional). If you choose the Notify alert mode, the app asks to send notifications. They are created on your phone by the app; no server is involved.
Live Activity (optional, on by default). While armed, the app shows a Live Activity on the Lock Screen, in the Dynamic Island, and in the Smart Stack on a paired Apple Watch. It contains the session state (calibrating, armed, tripped, stopped), the time the session started, the number of trips, which camera and alert mode you chose, and the reason monitoring stopped. It never contains photos, video, audio, or anything about what the camera saw. This information is passed between your iPhone and your Apple Watch by iOS and watchOS, not by us. You can turn it off in Settings.
What is stored on your phone
Evidence. Each event is a folder inside the app's private container holding a small metadata file (time, camera, alert mode, sensitivity, motion reading, clip length, which files were saved, pin state, and a fixed-vocabulary note if something failed), up to three JPEG photographs, and one MP4 clip. The folder is excluded from iCloud backup and protected with iOS file protection. No location, no names, no labels, and no description of the scene are stored.
Settings. Eight preferences: whether you have seen the welcome screen, sensitivity (Low, Auto, High), haptics on or off, re-arm after an event on or off, Live Activity on or off, alert mode, camera, and whether to use the depth sensor. Nothing else.
App Store builds write no diagnostic logs. (Development builds write a motion-reading trace used for testing; it is compiled out of the shipped app.)
Retention and deletion
Evidence stays until you delete it or until the app's 1 GB evidence budget is exceeded, at which point the oldest unpinned events are deleted automatically. Pinned events are never deleted automatically. You can delete any event, or all events, from the Events screen. Deleting the app deletes every event; we cannot recover them because we never had them.
Export
Nothing leaves the app unless you tap Export on an event and choose where to send it through the iOS share sheet. From that point the copy is governed by the app or service you chose.
What the app does not do
- It does not upload, sync, or transmit photos, video, audio, or anything else. The published app contains no networking code and links no networking libraries.
- It does not collect your name, email, phone number, or any account information.
- It does not collect or use your location.
- It does not use analytics, crash reporting, advertising identifiers, or any third-party software development kits.
- It does not track you across apps or websites.
- It does not recognize faces, identify people, or classify what it sees.
- It does not record in the background, while the phone is locked, or while pretending to be off. Recording state is always visible on screen.
- It does not contact police, a monitoring service, or anyone else.
Children
Tripwire is not directed at children and collects no information from anyone, including children.
Your responsibilities
You are responsible for using Tripwire lawfully. Laws about photographing, filming, and especially audio-recording people vary by country, state, and situation, and many require the consent of the people recorded. Point the camera only at places you have the right to monitor. Do not use Tripwire to monitor people covertly.
What Tripwire is not
Tripwire is a temporary awareness tool. It is not a professional security system, an alarm service, or an emergency response service. It can miss movement and it can alert when nothing important happened. Do not rely on it for safety. The app must be open on screen, the phone must stay still, and the phone should be powered; monitoring stops, and the app tells you, whenever any of those is no longer true.
Changes
If this policy changes we will post the updated version here and change the effective date above.
